Nermnu Biak Reading House

Nermnu Biak Reading House

Limited access and facilities, along with the lack of teaching capacity among adults around children, are contributing factors to the low literacy rates among children in Biak, Papua. The community's economic conditions also make ‘books’ seem like a luxury item.

Wahana Visi places great emphasis on improving literacy in impoverished areas of Indonesia. In Biak specifically, children's reading abilities fall below the national average. Through the Wahana Literasi program, we aim to intervene in schools and communities by focusing on enhancing five fundamental skills: letter recognition, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

In response to these challenges, one of the key components to be strengthened in Biak is a child-friendly reading corner/house. This will help children gain easier access to reading facilities, engage in positive activities during their free time, and develop a greater interest in learning for a better future.

Rumah Baca Nermnu will be established by renovating or revitalizing an existing building. In addition to reading and educational books, it will also be equipped with educational tools, digital learning materials, and the development of literacy resources contextualized for Papua. Furthermore, teaching quality will be improved through tutor training, monitoring, and evaluation activities.
