3 Popular Examples of Fundraising Activities

What Is Fundraising? Here’s the Explanation.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill.

This quote reminds us that life is not only about pursuing personal happiness, but also remembering those who are less fortunate. One of the simplest ways to do that is by giving.

The word “giving” is familiar, but have we truly reflected on its meaning? Giving means sharing what we have with others. Many people have been moved to share, especially during moments of crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic, when communities united by raising funds to help. This act is known as fundraising.

What is fundraising?

Fundraising is the act of collecting funds to support humanitarian activities. It can be done by individuals or nonprofit organizations (NGOs). Fundraising may involve money, services, or goods, which are later distributed to people in need.

Popular Types of Fundraising

Here are three popular examples of fundraising done around the world:

1. The Met Gala

If you're unfamiliar with fundraising activities, the Met Gala is one of the most famous forms. Held annually in New York, the Met Gala—also known as the Costume Institute Gala—is the biggest fashion night of the year.

Celebrities attend wearing extravagant, themed outfits designed by top fashion houses. Designers purchase event tickets priced at around $35,000 each, or $200,000–$300,000 per table, and invite celebrities to wear their designs on the red carpet. Funds collected support the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute operations.

2. Kitabisa.com

In Indonesia, Kitabisa.com is a well-known platform built on the concept of online fundraising. Its digital approach allows fundraisers to reach a wide network of donors. The platform is trusted because it is officially registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and emphasizes transparency in fund usage.

3. The “Chosen” Program by Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI)

Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) regularly runs online fundraising through child sponsorship. Donors sponsor a child with monthly contributions of IDR 200,000, which help provide education, water, and basic needs for the child, family, and community.

Recently, WVI introduced Chosen, a unique twist on the traditional sponsorship model. Instead of donors choosing a child, the children choose their donors. The emotional connection formed through this interaction creates meaningful impact for both sponsor and child.

Fundraising: A Blessing for Donors

“Give, and it will be given to you.” (Luke 6:38)

The verse teaches us that giving is part of a blessed life. Like a water tap that clogs if it never flows, a life without generosity eventually becomes empty. Taking a small step through digital fundraising platforms is one of the easiest ways to start giving today.
